Metric Measurement System
The metric measurement system known as the International System of Units (SI), is an international decimal system of weights and measures. It is used all over the world and it is easy to use.
Four base units of metric measurement system are:
- meter (m) for length
- kilogram (kg) for mass ( weight converter)
- second (s) for time
- ampere (A) for electromagnetism (amp converter)
A meter (m) as a length unit has been is defined as the distance traveled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 second.
All other length units and distance measurements in the metric system comes from the meter. Here is an ecample

Imperial or American Measurements
Imperial measurements have a less logical explanation but it is widely used in the U.S.
A yard (yd) can be defined as the length of a pendulum that causes its arc to swing in exactly 1 second.
The Nautical mile (mi) is the distance across 1′ (1/60 of a degree) around the earths surface.
The inch (in) is a unit of length in Imperial / the US metric system. The measure comes from the width of a human thumb.

The foot (ft) is a unit of length in an Imperial / US metric system. It’s a measurement based on the human body. The unit was standardized in the 1950s, and since then it is equal to 0.3048 m.
1 ft = 0.3048 m = 304.8 mm
